When you run a report, it is common for you to need the report with slight variations in the data selected. This is accomplished through filtering. One time you might need an inventory report on all Fords. The next time you might need Chevrolets. With Foxfire! you can easily accommodate this reporting requirement using filters.

Lesson Goals: You are going to add an Ask at Runtime filter condition to an inventory Request.

To specify the Ask at Runtime filter condition:

  1. From the Request Manager, copy LESSON9 by selecting it and choosing Save As from the File menu. Enter xxxLESS9 for the name (substituting your initials for xxx). See also Lesson 2: Copying a Request.
  2. Click the Edit icon on the toolbar to edit the Request.
  3. Click the Filter Results tab.
  4. Click And to add a new filter. We use And because a record must match both filter conditions to be included in the output.
  5. Select Cars Make in the Data Item drop-down box.
  6. Click on the Ask box.
  7. Click on the Green checkmark. You have now created an Ask-At-Runtime filter.
  8. Click the Save icon on the Design Preview toolbar.
  9. Click Close.
  10. Click the Preview icon in the Request Manager toolbar. Whenever you run or Preview this Request, you will see this dialog box.
  11. In the Enter Filter Values dialog box, select Ford from the Cars Make is Like drop-down box and click OK.

Your report will only include records for Fords.
  12. When you’re done, click the X on the upper right corner of the Request Preview window to close the window.
