You can use the Workbench and Design Preview window to do basic things like add or remove data items, move data items, or change the appearance of data items (see procedures below). You can also do more advanced tasks such as sorting and grouping, specifying the destination for your Request output, and performing custom processing (see related topics below).
Different ways to add data items:
From Select Data Items tab of the Workbench window…
- Highlight the item in the Choose From list (the list on the left) and click Add, or
- Highlight the item in the Choose From list and drag it into the Selected list, or
- Double-click an item in the Choose From list, or
- You can drag data items from the Choose From list onto the blue data item band in the Design Preview window and they will be added to the Selected Item list.

Different ways to delete data items:
From Select Data Items tab of the Workbench window…
- Highlight the item in the Selected list and click Remove, or
- Highlight the item and drag it back to the Choose From list, or
- Double-click an item in the Selected list.
From the Design Preview window…
- Right-click an item and select the Remove menu item.

Different ways to reorder data items:
From Select Data Items tab of the Workbench window…
- Click the grey box to the left of the data item in the Selected list (a double arrow appears) and drag the data item up or down in the list.
From the Design Preview window…
- You can re-order data items in the detail band by dragging them to their new position.

To change the appearance of a data item:

To filter your data:
You can filter your data instead of displaying all the data in the Request like you normally would. For more information, see Filtering Your Data.
To sort and group your data:
You can control the sorting of your data and how it will be grouped in your final output. For more information, see Sorting and Grouping Data.
To specify the destination of your output:
You can specify where your output will be sent. For example, you can send it to the screen, printer, or file such as a spreadsheet. You can also email your output and specify formatting options. For more information, see Specifying Your Output
To do custom processing:
You can execute special processes while running the Request. Custom Processing requires technical expertise. For more information, see Custom Processing
