If you are using a large database with many Data Items, the process of selecting Data Items for use in a Request can be quite challenging. When faced with as few as several dozen data Items, the Data Item selection list can appear impossibly long. If that list grows to hundreds or thousands of Data Items, the task of picking the correct Data Items can be almost impossible.

Foxfire! has created a solution to that problem. By placing Data Items into Data Item Groups, the developer can significantly reduce the challenges associated with managing the size of Data Item lists. Simply create logical Data Item Groups then add specific Data Items into their most logical Data Item Group. Of course it is up to you as a Developer to decide what the logical groupings should be.

Data Item Group Editor

New Group: Create a new Data Item Group. After creation, the new Data Item Group will be empty.

Rename Group: Rename an existing Data Item Group. Rename the currently selected Data Item Group. (A Data Item Group must be selected for this option to be available).

Remove Group: Remove an existing Data Item Group. This will delete the currently selected Data Item Group. Any Data Items belonging to the removed Data Item Group will be moved to (Ungrouped). (A Data Item Group must be selected for this option to be available).

Foxfire Items: The left panel shows a tree structure that lists Data Item Groups and Tables. The Data Item Group tree includes an entry called (Ungrouped). Data Items that are in (Ungrouped) do not belong to any Data item Group.

The right panel shows a list of the Data Items that belong to the currently selected item in the left panel. They can belong to a Data Item Group, (Ungrouped) or to a Table.

To place a Data Item in a Data Item Group, simply drag the item from the right panel to one of the Data Item Groups. To remove a Data Item from a Data Item Group, simply drag it to another Data Item Group or drag it to (Ungrouped).

In the Tables section you will also see an entry for (No Table). This will show Data Items that have been defined but are not associated with any physical Table. These would be calculated fields, or UDF’s. Even though they do not belong to a Table, they can be associated with a Data Item Group.

Notes:

  1. A Data item does not have to belong to any Data Item Group.
  2. A Data item can belong to no more than one Data Item Group.
  3. You cannot drag a Data Item into a Table.

When you are finished, close the window by clicking on File then Exit or click the X in the upper right corner of the screen.
