A Master Detail Report displays grouped items as group headings and the other data items in columns below the group break. A new heading is printed for each new group or each page.


To sort and group your data:

  1. From the Request Manager, highlight the Request LESSON4.
  2. Click the Preview icon on the toolbar to look at the output in the Preview window. Notice that the Make and Model are very wide columns. The values for Make and Model also repeat on multiple lines.
  3. Click the X on the upper right corner of the Request Preview window to close the window.

  4. From the Request Manager, right-click on LESSON4.
  5. Click on Save As… and change the Request name to xxxLESS4 (substituting your initials for xxx).
  6. Change the Title to “Cars Inventory Master-Detail Layout.”
  7. Click OK.
  8. Right-click on xxxLESS4 and choose Output from the menu. This is a shortcut for getting to the Specify Output tab on the Workbench window.
  9. Select the Report-Master/Detail w/Group Headings in the Type drop-down box.

  10. Click the Sort and Group Results tab.

  11. Double-Click Cars Mileage to add Cars Mileage to the current sort list.
  12. Make sure the sort list shows Make, then Model, then Mileage. Drag items up or down in the list if necessary by clicking on the grey box to the left of the item.
  13. Highlight Cars Make and click on Group.
  14. Right-click on Cars Make and click Group Options.
  15. In the Appearance tab, clear the box labeled Show Group Footer and any other checkboxes that are checked underneath Show Group Footer. This will hide the footer from appearing for Cars Make.
  16. Highlight Cars Model and click on Group.
  17. Right-click on Cars Model and click Group Options.
  18. In the Appearance tab, clear the box labeled Show Group Footer and any other checkboxes that are checked underneath Show Group Footer. This will hide the footer from appearing for Cars Model.
  19. Click the Save icon on the Design Preview toolbar.
  20. Click the Close icon on the Design Preview toolbar.
  21. Highlight the Request and click the Preview icon on the toolbar to preview it.
  22. Click the X on the upper right corner of the Request Preview window to close the window.
